Cal Ripken, Jr. is a legendary baseball player. Cal Ripken was born on August 24 1960 in Havre de Grace, Maryland and was raised in Aberdeen, Maryland. His full name is Calvin Edwin Ripken Jr. His father was a coach for the Baltimore Orioles during the late 80s. He was Ripken’s mentor in baseball and life. In 2001, Cal Ripken Junior retired from the game after playing 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Only seven baseball players were able to perform the feat of doing more than 3000 hits and 400 home runs. And he was one of them. On September 6, 1995, the record was set in his name, for playing most games in a row during his game against the California Angels. Lou Gehring retained the achievement for successive games for 56 years. Ripken managed to play 2,632 consecutive games before he ended his streak in 1998. He played a long sixteen season streak from May 30, 1982 until September 20, 1998.
Ripken was a hardworking player and he was voted 19 times as the MLB All-Star player. He was also the baseball’s all-time Iron Man because he played despite of his injuries. Ripken, 6′ 4”, is counted among the great baseball shortstops.
Ripken was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility on January 9, 2007. He always was one to emphasize that athletes could and should also be role models to their community. Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation was set up by him. He created the foundation in his father’s memory and as a means to support disadvantaged youth in Americas struggling communities. He was always one who believed that it is important to give back to the community.
